My girlfriend's disapproval of my drinking is straining our relationship
I'm a 30-year-old guy in a long-term relationship, and my girlfriend and I are planning to get engaged soon. However, my drinking habits have been causing issues between us lately. I enjoy having drinks to unwind on weeknights sometimes, but she gets visibly upset and angry whenever I drink, even if I'm just a bit tipsy. She's slept in the guest room to avoid me when I've been drinking.
I know I've overdone it in the past - there were a couple incidents where I got way too drunk and did some embarrassing things. We had a big argument about it last year and I promised to work on myself. But now even casual drinking seems to bother her. When I drink, I know I get more talkative and clumsy, but I don't think my behavior is that bad.
I love my girlfriend and don't want this to ruin our relationship. But I also feel frustrated that I can't relax with a few drinks without her getting angry at me. I'm not sure how to talk to her about this without it turning into another argument. Any advice on how to approach this sensitively? I want us to be able to find a compromise we're both comfortable with.
