Interview With Scott

“It’s very easy to get distracted by all the “shiny objects” that I’m bombarded with on a daily basis.”

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do

These days I’m a full time affiliate marketer. Before I got involved in affiliate marketing, I worked in the high tech industry doing product management and product marketing.

How long have you been working with HN?

I started working with HN in 2014.

What kind of offers do you love promoting? Has that changed over the last few years?

I like promoting health and fitness offers since that is an area where I have a lot of personal interest. I look for products and services that offer commissions over $20 and have lifetime cookies. That really hasn’t changed much over the last few years.

If you could have a budget of $100 to start a website, how would you go about it?

I’d buy a domain on NameCheap, get web hosting with HostNine, and put up a free WordPress site. I’d have plenty of money left over to get an upgraded theme if I wanted to.

What has been your best month in terms of affiliate revenue?

$14,000.

Have you faced any particular difficulties or challenges during your affiliate marketing career?

The biggest challenge has been trying to keep up with and stay on top of all the algorithm changes of Google. Another challenge is focus. It’s very easy to get distracted by all the “shiny objects” that I’m bombarded with on a daily basis. Finally, I tend to want to do everything myself, and that makes it very difficult to grow and scale quickly.

If you could go back in a time machine to when you were just getting started, what affiliate marketing related advice would you give yourself?

First, I’d tell myself that to be successful in affiliate marketing, you have to take a marathon mentality vs. a sprinter mentality. You have to think about the business for the long haul.

Second, I would say that to be successful you have to be consistent. That means you have to think about doing something positive for your business each day. No matter what that is. Those daily consistent steps will eventually produce revenue, and that revenue will build.

The third thing would be that action cures fear. Take action and do something, even if it’s not perfect. Don’t get paralysed with fear or wanting everything to be perfect.

Are you following any affiliate or online marketing related blogs?

The three that I typically follow are:

  • Diggity Marketing
  • Fat Stacks
  • Authority Hacker

If the Internet didn’t exist, what do you think your occupation would be?

Probably a personal trainer.

The HN team loves a good night out. So we can prepare for a night out together in the future, we’d like to know your favourite drink?

In terms of hard liquor, my favorite is bourbon. For wine, I love a good Pinot Noir. Nothing beats an ice cold beer on a hot summer’s day!
